August, 2009:

Just like I remember…

I think there are certain essential qualities to the American experience. One of these is the traditional parade that comes along with the County Fair. Now come back with us to those thrilling days of yesteryear…But seriously Mr. Peabody, where is the Wayback machine?

gedc0033

Back to the experience, you can pretty much insert the name of anytown USA into the picture. For me, it was the flower parade in Lompoc in the 60′s.

You know you have stumbled upon the real deal when the Shriners are in the parade.

gedc0067

Serious equestrian stuff. My sister’s favorite variety of horse, and no I can’t remember what it’s called. So, if you know, leave a comment. The first 100 people to correctly name this horse will get a pony ride.

gedc0073

This one was my favorite. He just looked majestic.

gedc0076

I am told by those who know such things, that the leather and silver work alone can be worth staggering sums. All I got ta say is, sometimes ya gots ta have yo bling.

gedc0079

If I were a real blogger, I would run over to Wiki and grab some historical background for the next picture. Alas, pure speculation is much more fun. So, what the hell was someone thinking, or drinking, or smoking, when they designed a bicycle so tall, that you cant get off. But yea, if I had a chance to ride one in the parade….

gedc0089

We would be remiss unless we give props to the Ophir prison marching kazoo band.

gedc0097

Wagon and coachwork have always been a particular fascination for me. I am pretty sure that it is in my genes. No, seriously, my great grandfather was a coachmaker. Check this one out. Almost as cool as the hearse from an earlier posting.

And no parade would be complete without a monster truck. This last addition to the roster of the classic American small town, mainstreet parade is a recent one. Wonder what kind of mileage he gets.

gedc0137

Just another day in the life.

You Are Here -X- episode one

gedc1246

Everywhere you go….Curly Larry and Moe. From Bob Latchaw’s lips to God’s ears.

Here in fact, where we are is clearly marked. And so it was.

This particular map shows the location of my recent jaunt north to the county known as Plumas.

In the county known as Plumas, there are many interesting phenomenon. The first, and by far the most spectacular can only be called the Brigadoon effect.

It was most obvious when watching the parade on Saturday, or just listening to neighbors gossip at the fair. Quincy which is the county seat, is only one Goober short of a Mayberry.

And sis, just so you know….I only pretended not to be afraid of heights. These were taken from high atop the kiddy Ferris wheel. Boy am I glad the big one wasn’t running.

gedc1312

gedc1314

And it’s not just about the rides oh no. This is the real deal County Fair.  For instance, ya got yer rodeo…

gedc1317

And ya got yer friendly pet rooster.

gedc1264

And even Arnold the pig from Green Acres.

gedc1282

The big grandstand event on the second night was the Lumberjack contest. The stands were SRO.  And since lumbering is an important commercial enterprise in the region, these were real lumberjacks.  When interviewed after the performance, not one of them could even hum the Monty Python “Lumberjack” song. I rest my case.

gedc00066

Next – The parade. Episode two. Check back often. Both of you.

One for Doug

First, an update to the travelogue…I am in Quincy California. I got here yesterday for the county fair, and no, I am not 100% sure what county that would be. However, county fairs are a) cool b) ) great places to see things like monster trucks and antique hearses. The following pictures are of the latter not the former.

I place them here if not for my general readership; then for my son the horror writer. I will add more frothy and fun postings for the general readership later, but for now, this one’s for Doug. I saw this horse drawn hearse and knew you would be all over it like….well you know…. a zombie on a drumstick.  Bon appetite!

On one level it is a little weird that I am harvesting interesting stuff for the Trifling Blog from the “Want ads”.  But since we at the Trifling blog are always trying to improve customer service; those of you who are currently enjoying a largess from employment as I am, will appreciate this post.

Big Update on the Trifling blog

The Trifling blog is morphing to become a more effective tool for you, my reader.  Yesterday this blog was just the place you went to check the weather,  get stock quotes, and see your credit score; now we have added additional functionality. Notice that the word   f u n c t i o n a l i t y  begins with the word fun. This will be an important concept later.

Those of you that have been following the travelogue section no doubt know that we have reached our primary destination: Santa Barbara, CA. But some of you may be wondering “what next”, or at very least….why?

The answer to both these questions astonished reader, is economic theory.  The locational theory states that the success of any business is based on 1) location 2) location and 3) location. This can apply to the individual as well.  Yes, I have moved back to California to seek my fortune. I am fit and fin and ready for bear. And while  I have no idea what that means, it does fit nicely with the Bear motif on the state flag.

Why do I tell you all this? More information than you could possibly need/and/or/want? This is where the telethon portion of our program begins. Because I need your help. If you (and you know who you are) are a friend, or acquaintance of Don Warrick -  author of the Trifling Blog and you have an uncle in the diamond business in Antwerp and he needs a right hand fellow to run the illegal diamond trade….well you get the picture. All offers of legitimate employment will also be considered.

This year our telethon features new video footage under the “video” tab. An excerpt from a video that one of Don’s students made in a shameless ploy for extra credit. He is now using it as a shameful self promoting commercial. Disgusting. But these are the lengths he is willing to go to.

There are also new tabs for my business resume, cover letter and stageography (a nice word that I just made up.  Hmmmm, impressive)

Don’s book “Me-Mail – the big book of geek consciousness” will be available in the lobby after tonight’s lecture. Please have exact change ready.

Cruisin’

The year was 1975 and cruisin’ had a different meaning. The thing to do back then, was to take your car over to Van Nuys blvd and cruise up and down. That’s all. Just go up the street…….then down the street…………then up the street.  Shortly before my 18th birthday, I got busted in Van Nuys for going up the street (or was it down) after the witching hour of 10 pm. This put me in violation of the curfew law; and started me down the path of a long criminal career – rogue that I was.

Cruisin’ now is a more genteel repast. On any lazy Santa Barbara day you will encounter buttloads of people on their bikes. My friend Sterling bought himself a “beach cruiser” the other day, and with me on his mountain bike, and him on the wheeled lazyboy, we set out for the beach. It is worth noting that the afore mentioned Bootiesatva (nickname for Mr. Sterling Branton) carefully mapped out a nearly flat route to the beach on his built-in tomtom.  He climbed atop his trusty steed, and out into the neighborhood he rode…

gedc1168

I followed shortly behind and Bill and Ted’s big adventure began. We road past the bakery….(yummmmmmm)

gedc1179

Then we continue to peddle our asses off (not really, but had to work that into the post somewhere – I was originally going to use it as the title) arriving at last at the starting point of any good bike ride down the beach – the Santa Barbara marina.

gedc1169

Finally we arrive at the beach.  See? It’s the large body of water on the other side of the sand. I am gesturing to it in this picture as a public service for my many readers who are directionally challenged. And yes, we know who we are…

gedc1174

Becuase, like the moon launch there will always be skeptics who, for their own twisted political purposes want to subvert the truth, here is another picture of the previously discussed ocean. This time with boats – real boats. And a palm tree. A real palm tree.

gedc1173

And of course, no trip to the beach would be complete without chick watching. Here is Bootiesatva preparing to watch chicks.

gedc11751

And actually watching chicks….

gedc1176

Finally we made it back to the hood….

gedc1178

Good nite Santa Barbara…

Luna Gitana

gedc1142

Livin that roady life again. Although I am not sure that “roady” is spelled with a “Y”. For that matter, I never had a great deal of confidence in the overall literacy of the roadys I have encountered. But then again, one should never judge a book by its cover, or a band by it’s roadies. Looks better with an “ie”. And truth be told,  I was not an official roady, but rather was the guy at the CD table adjacent to the bandstand where the real money is made. Seriously, I sold a butt load of their CD’s. Go the web site and give them a listen. You will want to own some of this music.

My friend and room mate Sterling Branton provides vocals and violin. The music is an eclectic mix of Latin, World percussion, Opera, Beatles and a little funk. All played simultaneously.

This was the coolest of outdoor festivals cause it was the big BALOON festival in Santa Paula. I remember Santa Paula because it is a small inland town where my grandmother lived. I can remember driving there early some Saturday morning’s with my dad. This is what we drove

gedc1131

How bitchin was my dad! Well, not actually but it would have been exponentially more interesting growing up if he had decided to be a low rider. Somehow, thinking of my dad in a hairnet with a tear drop tat just doesn’t resonate. Imagine that. But I digress.

Ah, the aforementioned Grandmother. We only knew her as “Bernice”

274

Indeed what I remember most about “Beece” was her hair. I often wondered if perhaps her head was shaped that way. She was an interesting lady. While I did not know her well, what I can say in her behalf is that she was very instrumental in bringing up my oldest sister Sherry, who is….the balm. And a truly beautiful person. Shout out to Sherry and to Liz.

Back to Luna Gitana. The festival was a kick. Good crowd, beautiful day, and lots of fun in Santa Paula

gedc1159

And that’s the news from Santa Boo Boo. Be well and namaste.
